Recently our school qualified for a grant that provides healthy snacks for all students everyday. These include colorful veggies and fruits. It is a valuable program that instills healthy eating habits in our students, as well as provides students with the nutrients and energy to get through the school day!
Recently students became aware that we were throwing away a lot of food waste and realized that this may be an environmental issue. We also had fruit flies! Students decided to synergize during Intervention time at the end of the day and decided to take on a research project to learn more about composting, thinking this may be a possible solution for Madison School.
We took a week to investigate what composting is, how it works, and its benefits. Then we had an awesome guest speaker come in to show how composting worked. Our guest speaker was Paul Burback from Muscatine Power and Water. He has a personal compost bin at home. Mr. Burback shared his experiences with us and the do's (and don'ts) of composting.

We are still thinking about a possible compost program that will benefit Madison School!
